RGB surface mount laser module "Vegalas" Source: ams OSRAM
In January 2022, ams OSRAM announced a prototype design of the RGB surface-mounted laser module "Vegalas." Mass production is scheduled to start in the first half of 2023, and a limited number of samples have already been supplied. By using Vegalas, the projection light engine of smart glasses for AR (Augmented Reality) and MR (Mixed Reality) can be downsized to a minimum of 0.7 cm3, which is about half the conventional size. It is a size that can be mounted on a commercially available eyeglass frame, making it possible to give smart glasses the design of conventional eyeglasses and sunglasses.
The size of the module is 7.0 x 4.6 x 1.2mm. It was equipped with three lasers with red (640 nm), green (520 nm) and blue (450 nm) wavelengths in a surface mount package. The package is hermetically sealed to protect each laser element from contamination and degradation. In addition, the company has partnered with the LaSAR Alliance partner company and provided Vegalas for the reference design of the laser beam scanning (LBS) projection light engine. The size is 10 x 11 x 0.6 mm, which is about 60% smaller than the light engine that uses 3 of the company's laser emitters "TO38".
