Microsoft says Windows 11 can be installed on PCs with older CPUs that don't meet the recommended hardware requirements. The Verge reports that although OS installation restrictions apply to upgrades through Windows Update, downloading the ISO file and manually installing it will not be subject to this restriction.
In the minimum hardware requirements for Windows 11 announced by Microsoft in June, in the case of Intel, the 8th generation Core and later CPUs were officially included in the support. However, Microsoft says that this requirement is mainly to ensure driver support and the operational reliability of the entire system when companies evaluate the installation of Windows 11, and prevents individuals from trying upgrades at their own risk. explains that it is not.
Of course, Microsoft doesn't recommend it, just says it won't prevent it. Even if you install Windows 11 on a PC that does not meet the requirements, it is necessary to understand that there is a high possibility that problems such as unstable operation and blue screens will occur.
Most individual PC users probably don't bother to download an ISO file, prepare an installation media, and put an OS on their PC that they don't know if it works. But if you have some skill and really want to give it a try, you can do so as long as it meets the true minimum requirements of a dual-core 1GHz or faster 64-bit CPU, 4GB RAM, and 64GB storage.
In addition, in order to increase the number of processors that support Windows 11, Microsoft is conducting verification work in cooperation with Intel and AMD and updating the Windows 11 compatibility check program.
From Microsoft's point of view, with the release of Windows 11, PCs equipped with new security technologies such as DCH (Declarative, Componentized, Hardware Support Apps) drivers, TPM (Trusted Platform Module), and VBS (Virtualization-based Security) It seems that the real intention is to encourage the transition. However, for general users, replacing a machine is a big burden. Providing workarounds without enforcing minimum requirements should also help avoid user frustration.
