Business Insider of overseas media reports that Microsoft in the United States has canceled the development of the next MR headset "next HoloLens (Hololens 3: tentative name)".
The first model of Hololens was announced in 2015. This is a device that can overlay 3D virtual objects on a real landscape, and in 2019, the second generation model `` HoloLens 2'' with an expanded viewing angle was announced. In addition, HoloLens 2 has announced a supply to the US Army's Integrated Visual Enhancement System (IVAS).
On the other hand, according to this report, opinions are divided within Microsoft whether to make HoloLens a commercial product such as IVAS or to steer to the general public. In addition, the company's CEO Satya Nadella wants to develop software that can be used by other companies for AR (augmented reality) and MR (mixed reality) headsets rather than hardware. However, it has been reported that the alliance for that purpose has not been successful.
In January, Microsoft announced that it would partner with Qualcomm in the United States to develop chips for lightweight AR smart glasses. Combined with the news of the withdrawal from HoloLens, Microsoft may be turning to a lightweight AR smartglass for consumers rather than a heavy MR headset.
As Google's headset "Google Glass" has become a commercial product and the company's development of AR smart glasses "Project Iris" has been reported, tech giants are turning to more realistic headset development. It seems to be cut.
