Blind people will like it.
In early 2018, audio equipment maker Bose launched a concept model similar to Snapchat's AR glasses, drawing on buzzwords like "AR" and "digital assistant."
So far, Bose should not have been a challenging company to try out different industries. The eyewear development was perhaps a technical demonstration for them...until it happened.
These glasses were named "Frames". Despite being in the form of sunglasses, there is no visual AR gimmick. Instead, it is equipped with the world's first "audio AR" technology. It may be natural that Bose recommends audio, but it is a unique differentiation.
Using the 9-axis sensor installed in Frames that captures head movements and the GPS of the connected smartphone, it will tell you information according to your current location by voice. In other words, it's like a voice guide that navigates you. Besides, you can tell me trivia information, and you can play music normally.
It comes with a built-in mic so you can summon Siri or Google Assistant (Alexa not yet). The right vine has multi-function buttons for controlling the music.
This idea of AR using hearing instead of sight. It is said that it is still in development, but it will be announced at SXSW, an entertainment and tech festival held in Austin in March 2019.
Frames come in two designs: square, like Ray-Ban's classic Wayfarer model, and round. Both models are sports lenses with 99% UVA/UVB protection, but no mention of polarized options.
The Frames are expected to cost $199, roughly half the price of the classic Bose QuietComfort 35 II noise-cancelling wireless headphones.
Shipping overseas is January 2019. Putting aside the question of whether or not to wear sunglasses, is audio AR really a good thing...? Recently, there are many headphones with built-in AI assistants, but I wonder if it will be convenient when that becomes the main product.
